Issues Concerning International Nutrition Essay - 534 Words
Food, Nutrition and Health 355 has provided students an opportunity to tackle the issue of world hunger. Through the act of making a conscious effort to change aspects of their lifestyle and inform others during the duration of their time in this course about issues concerning international nutrition. I have decided to take an action that will occur for a set period of time. However, there is a possibility that I could continue this action and make it a lifestyle alteration. I have been a vegetarian for less than a year after learning about the many negative aspects that are involved in the slaughter, processing of animals, as well as health concerns that are associated with consuming meat. However, I am beginning to think that this mightâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Grain is perfectly suitable for humans to consume, however, the majority of it is evidently being used mainly for meat production. Some individuals may argue the fact that animal proteins are the easiest way to attain n ecessary levels of protein, however, cereal crops and other legumes can be combined to provide all necessary amino acid nutrients needed (Cassidy et al., 2013). Decreasing the consumption of meat would in turn affect people who are suffering from hunger; global calorie availability could be increased by 70% by shifting crops away from animal feed (Cassidy et al., 2013). The justification of using crops for human consumption rather than animal consumption is reason enough for me to have already switched to a vegetarian diet. However, I understand that dairy and egg products also play a part in animal production. Animals still need to be fed whether they are to be slaughtered, or used for their milk or eggs. Consequently, I am on the path to change my diet, yet again, to not consume any animal derived food. While my small change in lifestyle may not affect the whole world, or anyone directly, I do believe that it will spark discussion and curiosity regarding the purpose behind my choi ce. These discussions can possibly lead to debate and enlightenment about the state of our food system and the actions involved in resolving global hunger.
